Maintenance and Care
This page is for the care and maintenance of granite and marble
monuments.
The easist way to begin is with hot soapy water and a stiff
nylon brush, this and
a little scrubbing will take care of most of your cleaning needs. This will
remove dirt and grime, most of your tree sap and grass stains.
After you clean the monument with hot soapy water then inspect
it for any other blemishes
it might have. Rust stains from cradle style flower arrangements seem to top
the list of monument
staining. And with this, preventative care is usually the best. Start by using
flower vases on
the sides
of the monument, and if you use cradle arrangements, make sure that they are
plastic and not just
plastic coated. The plastic coating on metal cradles becomes brittle and in
time flakes away,
leaving bare rusting metal on the monument. Some rust stains will fade out
with time, while
others will need to be removed with industrial chemicals.
Caution: These chemicals can permanently
damage your monument and should only be used by a professional.
Try to avoid placing materials that are not approved for the
outdoors, like dyed materials such as
flowers, berry sprigs, non-color safe fabrics etc...on your monument.
Water and sunlight on such items can severely stain your stone, causing you
costly repair.
Marble monuments are softer and more absorbent than granite
ones, so be especially
careful with them. The most common marble used in the monument industry,
is usually a light gray or white color. Do not use oil based cleaners or solvents
on
marble or granite, again, this will result in costly repairs.
